The void is absence and presence, both at once, always. Applied to art, the void makes me think of French artist Yves Kleins 1960 Leap into the Void, a brilliant pre-digital bit of photographic trickery in which the artist is caught in mid-air, either falling or flying, or both, in perpetuity.
Two negatives--one showing Klein leaping, the other the surrounding scene (without the tarp)--were then printed together to create a seamless documentary photograph. To complete the illusion that he was capable of flight, Klein distributed a broadsheet at Parisian newsstands commemorating the event.
Sometimes its just about knowing who to contact in order to get invited to events. Call up the galleries that are hosting the exhibition opening you want to attend or, even better, if they have a PR team, contact them directly. Be polite and express your genuine interest in the event.
How to get your work in a gallery Prepare the works you want to feature. As an artist, you may have hundreds of pieces you want to show the world. Leverage social media. Attend events at the gallery. Practice curating your own art. docHub out to the owner with an offer.
How to Submit to Gallery Shows Select Your Artwork. Put some time into choosing the work you want to submit to the exhibition. Prepare Your Submission Files. Follow Instructions for Submission. Double-Check Your Submission for Mistakes. Pay the Submission Fee.
The painter of space leaps into the void! The man was avant-garde artist Yves Klein, and it was his own satirical publication featuring his now-famous image Leap into the Void (1960). It was easy, at the time, to take the photograph at face valuethat Klein was abandoning himself to gravity.
Start by writing a letter of inquiry. Theres a pretty standard formula for writing a letter to a director of a gallery you want to target. Include the persons name, brief descriptions of your background, your body of work, your artists statement, website, and why you think your art is a good fit for their gallery.
Curators and galleries can only offer an exhibition to an artist they have heard of. Building your network and telling people when you are interested in exhibiting is more likely to lead to a show. Some galleries are open to approaches from artists. Having an exhibtion is generally decided by a gallery, not an artist.
