In reality, each chapter should be captured in about 300 words. For a typical book, the total outline will be around the 3,000-word mark. (Although for some business and personal development books, Ive seen chapter outlines as long as 5,000 words or more.)
This section is basically an annotated outline of the structure of your book. The point of the Chapter Summary section is to give the editor an idea of your content and your method of presenting that information, AND to make sure you are organized and know what you are writing about.
Your summaries should just be a few paragraphs long; acquisitions editors prefer short over long. By the way, memoir writers also need Chapter Summaries in their book proposalseven if the memoir is complete.
Write a one- or two-page synopsisabout 500-1000 words, single spacedand use that as your default, unless the submission guidelines ask for something longer. If your synopsis runs longer, anything up to two pages (again, single spaced) is usually acceptable.
Summaries are much shorter than the original materiala general rule is that they should be no more than 10% to 15% the length of the original, and they are often even shorter than this.
Your book proposals table of contents should contain the following sections: Overview. Marketing. Promotion. Competing Books. About the Author. List of Chapters. Chapter-by-chapter Summaries. Sample Chapters.
Formatting a book proposal A book proposal is a lot like a manuscript, but in addition to the sample chapters, it has a section that functions like a business plan, with an overview, author bio, audience analysis, comparative and competitive titles, marketing, publicity, and promotion.
Your cover letter should briefly introduce yourself to the editor and give them a short synopsis of your story, why you wrote it, and why readers will find it important, valuable or entertaining. This letter is also the place to let them know if youre making multiple submissions
