Once the material is injected into the mold cavity, it begins to cool and shrink. This shrinkage can cause voids or porosity to form in the middle of the wall thickness, as the material shrinks towards the mold wall that is causing the cooling.
Rotation molding is also called rotomolding, and it is used to produce mainly large hollow objects.
Sink marks are caused mainly by thermal contraction (shrinkage) during cooling. After the material on the outside has cooled and solidified, the core material starts to cool. Its shrinkage pulls the surface of the main wall inward, causing a sink mark.
Causes: Sink marks are often caused when the cooling time or the cooling mechanism is insufficient for the plastic to fully cool and cure while in the mold. They can also be caused by inadequate pressure in the cavity, or by an excessive temperature at the gate.
Increasing the shot size, increasing injection pressure, and increasing hold pressure will tend to help the most. Increasing the mold temperature (to allow for better packing), decreasing the melt temperature and decreasing the injection speed may also help to minimize or eliminate voids.
Here are some common remedies for flow lines in injection-molded products: Increase the injection speed, pressure and material temperature to ensure the material fills the mold before cooling. Round the corners of the mold where wall thickness increases to help keep flow rate consistent and prevent flow lines.
Sink marks appear as depressions on the surface of a molded part. These depressions are typically very small; however they are often quite visible, because they reflect light in different directions to the part.
A sink mark is a surface depression that generally occurs in thicker wall sections of molded parts. Sinks can also appear above ribs, bosses, and other part design features. A void is an internal bubble inside the part and can be visible in opaque and clear uncolored materials.
Voids form when the outside layer of the part cools faster than the inner layer of the part. This causes the inner layer of the part to basically pull-apart causing the void to form. While good part design dictates having a uniform wall thickness, sometimes thicker walls cannot be avoided.
Flow lines result from uneven cooling of the plastic within the mold. This can be caused by a poor mold design, or plastic temperatures, mold temperatures, injection speeds, or injection pressures that are too low.
