Four types of elastomeric impression materials are available in the market: addition silicone, also known as polyvinyl siloxanes (PVS), condensation silicone, polyether, and polysulfide.
There are three primary types of dental impressions: preliminary, final and bite registration: Preliminary impressions: Preliminary impressions are used for diagnostic purposes, or as the initial step in the process of fabrication (making) of different prostheses, including crowns and dentures.
There are three basic categories or types of impressions that may be deposited, detected, developed if need be and recovered at a crime scene. Latent. The skin has deposits of oil and perspiration that normally coat the surface. Patent. Plastic or Molded.
Patients should close their mouth as much as possible without biting down on the tray to avoid deformation of the mandibula and, thus, errors in the impression. Do not try to correct the position of the tray after insertion.
To achieve the best fit, we must take two sets of impressions. To succeed in placing the teeth where they belong and to provide you with the most natural appearance, you will have two fittings. You will have the opportunity to see what your denture will look like (teeth in wax) before it becomes a denture.
Drags or Pulls in the Impression Drags are a byproduct of depressions being left in the impression material when the tray is inserted, and they often cant be repaired simply by adding more material. Pulls result when extraneous material creates a fold most often at the gingival aspect.
The impression should be free of pulls, voids, and air bubbles (Figure 3). The preparations should be clean, crisp, and free of contamination; in addition, the impression material should have flowed 0.5 mm past the margin circumferentially around the tooth (Figure 4 through Figure 7).
Final impressions material are supplied in three forms or viscosity. Light body-is the easiest-flowing material to flow. Regular body-is slightly thicker than the light body form. Heavy body is the thickest of the three forms.
By their composition, the impression materials are divided into three major groups: nonaqueous elastomers, hydrocolloids, and inelastic materials. Elastomers include polysulfide, condensation and addition silicone, and polyether. Hydrocolloids are alginate and agar.
The amount of water required to mix with powder is greater than the amount required for the reaction. This excess water vaporizes during stiffening and a mass of interlocking gypsum crystals is formed. Voids occur between these crystals after evaporation of the water.
