A dental impression is a negative imprint of hard (teeth) and soft tissues in the mouth from which a positive reproduction (cast or model) can be formed. They are used to create a close replica of your teeth, your oral tissue or both.
The amount of water required to mix with powder is greater than the amount required for the reaction. This excess water vaporizes during stiffening and a mass of interlocking gypsum crystals is formed. Voids occur between these crystals after evaporation of the water.
Usually, voids at the margin are because of insufficient retraction or where fluid has accumulated, preventing the impression material from flowing around the margin. Using retraction cords with syringeable hemostatics is the best way to solve this problem. One technique is to use a double retraction cord.
Keep the mix tip permanently immersed in the paste to avoid the formation of air bubbles. Apply a liberal amount of wash material into the sulcus.Tips: Apply passive pressure while holding the impression tray in place. Never ask the patient to hold the tray. Never ask the patient to bite down on the tray.
Not all the teeth have been captured in the impression. Solution: Trying the tray in the mouth and looking to see if the tray is the correct size is the most common error. Fill tray properly with impression material. Failure to get the proper amount of impression material will prevent an accurate impression.
The best way to avoid air bubbles on the occlusal surfaces in an impression is to: Rub some alginate onto the occlusal surfaces prior to placing the tray into the patients mouth.
Patients should close their mouth as much as possible without biting down on the tray to avoid deformation of the mandibula and, thus, errors in the impression. Do not try to correct the position of the tray after insertion.
There are three primary types of dental impressions: preliminary, final and bite registration: Preliminary impressions: Preliminary impressions are used for diagnostic purposes, or as the initial step in the process of fabrication (making) of different prostheses, including crowns and dentures.
Not all the teeth have been captured in the impression. Solution: Trying the tray in the mouth and looking to see if the tray is the correct size is the most common error. Fill tray properly with impression material. Failure to get the proper amount of impression material will prevent an accurate impression.
Smear the impression material (ex: alginate) onto the occlusal surfaces of the teeth and into undercuts by finger pressure before the impression tray is placed. This prevents the occurrence of trapping bubbles in the impression.
