To measure a patient's post-void residual using ultrasound, start by applying gel on the probe and positioning it over the patient's pelvic area. Tilt the probe down to locate the empty bladder, adjusting until the largest dimensions are found. Use the freeze button to capture the image, then activate the caliper button to measure the bladder's width by marking the edges and pressing select. Repeat this process for the anterior-posterior dimension. Record the two measurements displayed in the lower corner of the screen. After documenting, unfreeze the image and rotate the probe to the sagittal (up-down) plane to continue the assessment.
