It can be mathematically expressed as Area of Intersection over Area of Union. Lets use this bird image as a reference. We have three object detection models, model A, Model B and model C. Ground Truth has been Illustrated using red color and predictions are shown using cyan color. model A has a relatively higher overlap with the Ground Truth compared to model B. IoU is a crucial metric for assessing segmentation models, commonly called Jaccards Index, since it quantifies how well the model can distinguish objects from their backgrounds in an image. Its used in numerous computer vision applications, such as autonomous vehicles, security systems, and medical imaging.
Mean Intersection over Union (IoU) is the area of overlap between the predicted segmentation and the ground truth divided by the area of union between the predicted segmentation and the ground truth.
Note: 0.5 IoU is typically considered a good score, while 1 is perfect in theory. No matter where you get the ground-truth data or how carefully you label, its extremely unlikely to have the predicted output match the ground-truth bounding box coordinates.
Intersection over Union (IOU) is a performance metric used to evaluate the accuracy of annotation, segmentation, and object detection algorithms. It quantifies the overlap between the predicted bounding box or segmented region and the ground truth bounding box or annotated region from a dataset.
We compute the IoU by dividing the area of the intersection by the area of the union. A higher IoU value indicates a more accurate prediction, while a lower value suggests a poor alignment between the predicted and ground truth bounding boxes.
If the prediction is completely correct, IoU = 1. The lower the IoU, the worse the prediction result. The proposed approach has worked well in practice. It is possible to define overlap between image areas, not necessarily rectangular.
The IoU score will be high if there is much overlap between the anticipated and ground truth boxes. In contrast, a low overlap will result in a low IoU score. An IoU score of 1 indicates a perfect match between the projected box and the ground truth box, whereas a score of 0 means no overlapping between the boxes.
