The ORDER BY statement in SQL is used to sort the fetched data in either ascending or descending ing to one or more columns. By default ORDER BY sorts the data in ascending order. We can use the keyword DESC to sort the data in descending order and the keyword ASC to sort in ascending order.
In SQL ORDER BY clause, we need to define ascending or descending order in which result needs to be sorted. By default, SQL Server sorts out results using ORDER BY clause in ascending order.
The ORDER BY clause is invalid in views, inline functions, derived tables, subqueries, and common table expressions, unless TOP, OFFSET or FOR XML is also specified. Using OFFSET 0 ROWS and no FETCH clause means return everything. Query the view again without an ORDER BY clause: SELECT * FROM Sales.
The keyword DESC in SQL, is used to sort the query result set in a descending order. The ASC keyword is used to sort the query result set in an ascending order. The default for ORDER BY when nothing has been explicitly specified is ASC.
ORDER BY Characteristics: The ORDER BY clause is used to get the sorted records on one or more columns in ascending or descending order. The ORDER BY clause must come after the WHERE, GROUP BY, and HAVING clause if present in the query.
If you don't specify an ORDER BY , then there is NO ORDER defined. The results can be returned in an arbitrary order - and that might change over time, too.
When ASC or DESC keyword is not specified, the ORDER BY clause sorts the records in ascending order.
You can use the ASC and DESC keywords to specify ascending (smallest value first) or descending (largest value first) order. The default order is ascending. For DATE and DATETIME data types, smallest means earliest in time and largest means latest in time.
Group functions ignore the NULL values in the column. To enforce the group functions ti include the NULL value, use NVL function.
