Carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) is an abnormal connection between the carotid artery and/or its branches and a large vein called the cavernous sinus. The cavernous sinus is located behind the eye and receives blood from brain, orbit, and pituitary gland.
Further classification is based on their etiologic and hemodynamic qualities. Direct CCFs are characterized by a direct connection between the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the cavernous sinus, whereas indirect CCFs result from an indirect connection involving cavernous arterial branches and the cavernous sinus.
