Select the cells you want to format. Press CTRL+1. In the Format Cells box, click the Number tab. In the Category list, click Date, and then choose a date format you want in Type.
If you want to see zero, format the cell as General or Number. On the other hand, Excel might be misleading you. If you see 1/0/1900, but the cell actually contains the result of a time calculation (i.e. the date part is zero), simply format the cell as Time or an equivalent Custom time format.
Setting the Date System for a Workbook Open or switch to the workbook. On the Tools menu, click Options. In Excel X and later versions for Macintosh, click Preferences on the Excel menu. A cell with 1/0/1900 has a format of Date not General. Or the value in the cell is not a proper date. If a cell has the value 0 and is formatted as a Date then it will show as 1/0/1900 since this has the value 0 on the Excel date system. When I change to general format, the 1/0/1900 does become 0 and thats great.
