How to fill out a W-9 form Download the W-9 form from IRS.gov. Provide your full legal name and business name. Describe your business structure. Exemption. Enter your mailing address. Add any account numbers. Provide your Social Security number or Employer Identification Number. See if you need to sign and date the form.
When is a W9 Not Required? A W9 from vendors is not required when payments will be less than $600 in a calendar year, but it is a good idea to request a W9 from all vendors. Also a W9 is not required when payments are not associated with conducting a trade or business.
Line 2 Business name If you have a business name, trade name, DBA name or disregarded entity name, fill it in here. If you do not have a business, you can leave this line blank.
Do I Have to Pay Taxes if I Fill Out a W-9? If you receive more than 600 dollars from that company in a calendar year, then yes. However, simply filling out a W-9 doesnt require a person to pay taxes.
You will need to fill out a W-9 form if you: Classify yourself as an independent contractor or freelancer. Are not a full-time employee of the business. Will be paid more than $600 for work provided to the business.
If youre a single member Limited Liability Company (LLC) that is a disregarded entity, then the Name line on your W9 needs to be that of the owner of the LLC (who would file a federal tax return), and not the LLC business name.
While tax form W-9 is used most commonly by independent contractors, gig workers, and freelancers who are paid $600 or more by a business, it can also be used to report other types of income to the IRS.
A Form W-9 must be completed by one party and furnished to a second party if the second party is going to furnish specific types of payments in the future. Most broadly, Form W-9 must be filled out by independent contractors that perform work for another party with which they are not employed.
