A void pointer in C++ is a special pointer that can point to objects of any data type. In other words, a void pointer is a general purpose pointer that can store the address of any data type, and it can be typecasted to any type.
Using void* is a guarantee that the pointer is always converted to the (hopefully) correct type before being used, which is one reason to use that, rather than using char* , where someone could unwittingly just access through the pointer, and think that it is actually a pointer to char .
When used as a function return type, the void keyword specifies that the function doesn't return a value. When used for a function's parameter list, void specifies that the function takes no parameters. When used in the declaration of a pointer, void specifies that the pointer is "universal."
To print the values stored in a void pointer, we can use the C-style casting. For Example : cout << *((int*)ptr); Here ptr is a void pointer that contains the address of an int variable.
void (C++) If a pointer's type is void* , the pointer can point to any variable that's not declared with the const or volatile keyword. A void* pointer can't be dereferenced unless it's cast to another type. A void* pointer can be converted into any other type of data pointer.
You need to cast the void* pointer to a char* pointer - and then dereference that char* pointer to give you the char that it points to!
Using void* is a guarantee that the pointer is always converted to the (hopefully) correct type before being used, which is one reason to use that, rather than using char* , where someone could unwittingly just access through the pointer, and think that it is actually a pointer to char .
Why do we use a void pointer in C programs? We use the void pointers to overcome the issue of assigning separate values to different data types in a program. The pointer to void can be used in generic functions in C because it is capable of pointing to any data type.
The fundamental difference is that in one char* you are assigning it to a pointer, which is a variable. In char[] you are assigning it to an array which is not a variable.
Simply doing array = ptr; or char * array = ptr; would perfectly do.
