Regardless of the format or the venue, DNR orders almost always follow the same general rules to be valid: DNR orders must be written by medical professionals rather than verbalized. Written DNR orders must include the patients name. DNR orders must be dated. The DNR order must be signed by the healthcare provider.
Your doctor makes the final decision. Doctors do not have to give you treatment if they think it will not work. A DNACPR decision must be made on an individual (person by person) basis. This means it must be based on your health, needs and priorities as an individual.
A DNR order is allowed for any reason. Any adult can request a DNR, including healthy adults. People most likely to use them are those who know in advance that their chance of surviving CPR is very low and/or they dont want to spend their last days on life support.
You may also be able to request a do-not-resuscitate form from your states Department of Health. Make sure to include your wishes in a living will or an advance care directive. Tell your healthcare proxy (healthcare agent) and your family of your decision. Your healthcare proxy can agree to a DNR order for you.
If the family disagrees with the DNR order, then they have a right to speak with the attending physician. The physician should make a reasonable effort to explain the patients prognosis and treatment options, along with the patients wishes. This alone can help clear up any misunderstandings.
Sometimes doctors and patients decide in advance that CPR should not be provided, and the doctor gives the medical staff an order not to resuscitate (DNR) order. If your physical or mental condition prevents you from deciding about CPR, someone you appoint, your family members or others close to you can decide.
DNR cons include: Arguments can arise if family members disagree about your loved ones decision. A DNR for the community may not apply when your loved one is admitted to the hospital. Some sources suggest that having a DNR can cause risks and the potential for less care for patients.
