Void cheques have been around for quite some time now, but they still continue to exist because they provide a quick way to withdraw funds from an account without having to rely on physical cash or using personal checks.
What is a void cheque? A void cheque is a cheque with the word VOID written across it, which prevents anyone from filling out the cheque and using it to make a payment.
If you try cashing old checks that bounce, the bank may charge a deposit item returned fee. The fee varies from bank to bank. Santander Bank, for example, charges $15 a check, while at Wells Fargo and Bank of America, the fee is $12. The fee might even be higher for international checks.
The void cheque will have three sets of pre-printed numbers that provide your bank information; the first set is a 5-digit transit number (which identifies your bank branch), the second set is a 3-digit institution number (which identifies your bank), and the third set is your account number.
Yes, this is safe and is the standard way for your employer to get the banking information they need to set up the automatic deposit. Its easier and less error prone for your employer to take your account number, transfer number and bank ID directly from your void check.
Are a void cheque and direct deposit the same? No, theyre not the same thing. A void cheque is often requested by an employer so it has the banking information it needs to facilitate setting up direct deposit of your pay into your bank account.
A voided check is a check with the word VOID across it, which indicates that it shouldnt be used for payment. Its typically written in large letters, so it cannot be mistaken for cash use.
In the same vein, if the check youve made a mistake on is voided and someone comes across it, they cant use it to fraudulently withdraw money from your account. Luckily, voiding a check is easy.
