A refrain (from Vulgar Latin refringere, to repeat, and later from Old French refraindre) is the line or lines that are repeated in music or in poetry the chorus of a song. Poetic fixed forms that feature refrains include the villanelle, the virelay, and the sestina.
A literary refrain in poetry is a line, phrase, or single word that is repeated periodically within the poem to build up drama, emphasis, or rhythm. The refrain is derived from the French word refraindre, which means to repeat. Refrains can rhyme, although it is not necessary.
Strophic form also called verse-repeating form, chorus form, AAA song form, or one-part song form is a song structure in which all verses or stanzas of the text are sung to the same music.
The chorus is where you repeat the catch melody or hook after each verse, with the words typically repeating as well. -The refrain is where you mix it up with something a bit different to break the monotony. The refrain is also sometimes called a bridge. if it occurs just once (a refrain usually repeats at least once).
Refrains typically feature a single line or phrase, while choruses consist of multiple lines that convey a songs central theme or message. But, its not uncommon for a refrain to reference and repeat a central line in a chorus, like in the Beatles Let It Be example.
A refrain is one or two lines that are repeated at the end or the beginning of the verse, tying the song together. Some popular examples of AABA songs are Somewhere Over The Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by Carole King, and Still Crazy After All These Years by Paul Simon.
What is the difference between a bridge and an interlude? A bridge in music is a musical passage that connects both parts of a song that is played instrumentally, sung, or performed as both. An interlude is often an instrumental or sung part of a song that comes between sections of lyrics that make up a song.
A refrain is a group of lyrics that are repeated in a song. Sometimes it is also referred to as a chorus. An example of a refrain can be found in the song Cheap Thrills by Sia. The refrain is what is being sung over and over again by both Sia and her backup singers.
