Type Tool. The Type Tools are what you will use when you want to add text to a Photoshop document. The Type Tool comes in four different variations and allows users to create both horizontal and vertical type. Note that whenever your create type in Photoshop, a new Type Layer will be added to your Layers Palette.
To edit text in Photoshop, first select the Type tool from the toolbar. Then, click on the text layer you want to modify or create a new one by clicking anywhere on the canvas. With the text selected, you can easily change its font, size, or color in the context menu appearing on top.
You can also press the T key on your keyboard to access the Type tool at any time. In the Control panel near the top of the screen, choose the desired font and text size. Click the Text Color picker, then choose the desired color from the dialog box. Click and drag anywhere in the document window to create a text box.
Go to Properties Character to select a preset style from the dropdown menu. Slide into your own style. With variable fonts, each preset style can be further customized. Click the Variable Font icon to access these slider settings.

Open a photo or Photoshop document (PSD). From the toolbar, select the Type tool or simply press T to quickly select it. The Horizontal Type Tool with which you can add text horizontally is selected by default.
