An instance is a virtual server in the cloud. Its configuration at launch is a copy of the AMI that you specified when you launched the instance. You can launch different types of instances from a single AMI. An instance type essentially determines the hardware of the host computer used for your instance.
An AMI includes the following: One or more Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) snapshots, or, for instance-store-backed AMIs, a template for the root volume of the instance (for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications).
All AMIs are categorized as either backed by Amazon EBS or backed by instance store. Amazon EBS-backed AMI The root device for an instance launched from the AMI is an Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volume created from an Amazon EBS snapshot.
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a template that contains a software configuration (for example, an operating system, an application server, and applications). From an AMI, you launch an instance, which is a copy of the AMI running as a virtual server in the cloud.
You cant change the instance type of a Spot Instance. If your instance is in an Auto Scaling group, the Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling service marks the stopped instance as unhealthy, and may terminate it and launch a replacement instance.
Starting today, you can now store and restore up to 5TB Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) to and from an Amazon S3 bucket. This enables storing and transferring of larger AMIs between partitions. The old limit was 1TB.
While common AMIs are published to all regions, the AMI ID is unique per region. This presents a challenge when writing CloudFormation scripts, as the AMI ID passed to EC2 resources is region specific, making your template region specific as well.
AMI is divided into two categories: EBS - backed Instances. Instance Store - backed Instances.
Now, let us take a look at what each of these five EC2 instance types offers in more detail: Type #1 - General Purpose Instances. Type #2 - Compute Optimized Instances. Type #3 - Memory-Optimized Instances. Type #4 - Accelerated Computing Instances. Type #5 - Storage Optimized Instances. Conclusion.
You can locate the following shared AMIs from the Amazon EC2 console by selecting the AMIs option from the navigation pane: Private images: that contain all the shared AMIs that are private and only for your use. Public images: that contain all the shared AMIs that have been created for public use.
