Background: Acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) can be caused by a number of conditions. A common preventable cause is poliomyelitis which is still being reported in Pakistan, Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), also known as Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, is another common cause of acute flaccid paralysis.
The signs and symptoms of AFP depends on the cause but common symptoms include; muscle atrophy, fever onset, respiratory insufficiency, tingling of the palms and soles of the feet, cramps, and sensory loss, and loss of bladder control.
The WHO has defined AFP as any child under 15 years of age with acute onset of focal weakness or paralysis (including GBS) or any person with paralytic illness at any age when polio suspected, characterized by flaccid (reduced tone), without other obvious causes (e.g. trauma)[5, 9].
Serum, CSF, and peripheral nerve tissue are the main sources of biomarkers for GBS. It is noteworthy that the CSF is the most important source of biomarkers. Proximal nerve roots located in the subarachnoid region are floating freely in CSF and are in close contact with CSF.
Diagnostic criteria frequently cite a pleocytosis of
Spinal tap (lumbar puncture). A small amount of fluid is withdrawn from the spinal canal in your lower back. The fluid is tested for a type of change that commonly occurs in people who have Guillain-Barre syndrome.
