The CSV filetype is a plain text file that holds lists of data and is useful for moving information between different software. Sometimes when opening a CSV file in Microsoft Excel the data appears jumbled such as in this example. This data is from an Atlas Copco MTF6000 controller and contains torque verification data. By examining the text I can see that the data is separated using semicolons, not commas. This would explain why Excel isnt properly displaying the data. To fix this issue we must open the Text Import Wizard. In older versions of Excel this is done by opening the CSV file using the File Import action, but in this newer version we must manually open the file by selecting File, then opening it from the disk or recent files list. Now that the Text Import Wizard is open we must tell Excel to use the Delimited data type which separates the text into fields using certain characters. Select Delimited and click next. In the Region dialog box, on the Formats tab, click Additional settings In the Customize Format dialog box, on the Numbers tab, type the character you want to use as the default CSV delimiter in the List separator box. For this change to work, the List separator should not be the same as Decimal symbol.
Learn how to preserve formatting for numerical values in CSV files. Open a blank Excel document. Navigate to the Data tab Click Get Data (Power Query) Click Text/CSV. Click Browse select the CSV file you exported from ApprentiScope. Click Next. Set Data type detection to Do not detect data types. Click Load. Be amazed!

To open a comma-delimited (CSV) file properly, use Excels Data Import from Text feature to open the import wizard and set all columns as text. If you click the file and allow Excel to open it automatically, the columns might be reformatted by Excel.
Click File Save As. Pick the place where you want to save the workbook. In the Save As dialog box, navigate to the location you want. Click the arrow in the Save as type box and pick the type of text or CSV file format you want.
Go to File Save As. The Save As dialog box appears. In the Save as type box, choose the text file format for the worksheet. For example, click Text (Tab delimited) or CSV (Comma delimited).
Therefore a CSV file represents a table of data (with rows and columns). The default delimiter for CSV files is the comma, but any symbol can be used as a CSV delimiter, for example, a horizontal tab.
Data saved in CSV will not retain data formatting.
