Theme and Variation A choreographic form in which a dance phrase or section of a dance is followed by subsequent phrases or sections that are variations of the original, usually for the sake of variety. Time The rate of speed and rhythm used from the beginning to the end of a dance.
Favorite Theme and Variations Bach: Chaconne in D Minor . Schubert, Wanderer Fantasy. Schubert, Death and the Maiden Quartet, second movement. Mendelssohn, Variations srieuses. Mozart, Clarinet quintet, fourth movement. Beethoven, Kreutzer sonata, second movement. Mozart, Piano Concerto 24, third movement.
Theme and variation is a popular musical form in which a composer states a melody and then repeats it several times with changes to create more interest and variety. Some famous examples of this form are Charles Ives Variations on America and Mozarts Twelve Variations on Vous dirai-je, Maman K.
A variation is music that is based on the original theme but is somehow different. A composer can vary the theme by changing the rhythm, changing the harmony, or by decorating the melody by adding additional notes.
Examples include John Bulls Salvator Mundi, Bachs Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her, Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, Violin Chaconne, and (D minor solo violin suite), Corellis La Folia Variations, Beethovens Diabelli Variations, the Finale of Brahmss Fourth Symphony, Variations on a Theme
Variation: A choreographic process in which known and defined elements (e.g., specific movements, movement phrases) are separated from their original relationship and restructured in a different pattern; male or female solo in a classical ballet.
If the melody of your theme is very distinctive, consider repeating and reharmonising it to create a variation. Consider reharmonising the theme with non-functional, non-diatonic, dissonant harmony. Use many extended chords, chromatic chords and added note chords to help you to avoid functional progressions.
Theme-and-variation structure generally begins with a theme (which is itself sometimes preceded by an introduction), typically between eight and thirty-two bars in length; each variation, particularly in music of the eighteenth century and earlier, will be of the same length and structure as the theme.
