A variation is music that is based on the original theme but is somehow different. A composer can vary the theme by changing the rhythm, changing the harmony, or by decorating the melody by adding additional notes.
The theme and variations form involves an experimentation with one musical idea: A-A1-A2-A3. The rondo contains three to four musical sections and alternates between the A sections and each other section A-B-A-C-A-D-A. The sonata has the A-B-A sections: first the exposition, the development and then the recapitulation.
In a rondo form, the composer introduces a theme called a refrain which returns throughout the piece. Between restatements of the theme are sections of contrasting music called episodes, which often occur in a different key from the original refrain.
The main theme of a rondo is usually lively and simple. The rondo is only used as a movement in a multi-movement work; never as an independent work.
Examples include John Bulls Salvator Mundi, Bachs Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her, Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, Violin Chaconne, and (D minor solo violin suite), Corellis La Folia Variations, Beethovens Diabelli Variations, the Finale of Brahmss Fourth Symphony, Variations on a Theme
A theme is a musical idea that is repeated throughout the piece its in. Themes can be melodies, but they dont have to be.
Rondo starts with a main theme that repeats itself against contrasting sections. examples are a 5 part ABACA and a 7 part symmetrical ABACABA. A is the main theme. B and C are variations.
Theme and variation is a popular musical form in which a composer states a melody and then repeats it several times with changes to create more interest and variety. Some famous examples of this form are Charles Ives Variations on America and Mozarts Twelve Variations on Vous dirai-je, Maman K.
