An abnormal Pap test or HPV test result may mean more testing is needed to see if a cancer or a pre-cancer is present. The tests that are used include colposcopy (with biopsy), endocervical scraping and cone biopsies.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Treatment Options After an Abnormal Pap Test This means you can watch and wait. Low-grade cervical changes are unlikely to become cervical cancer. If the changes are moderate- to high-grade, your doctor will evaluate more options. These changes create a higher risk of cervical cancer.
The color of your vaginal discharge can mean theres a problem: Yellow, grey or green: Yellow, grey or green discharge may suggest a bacterial or sexually transmitted infection (STI). Brown or red: Brown or red discharge is usually related to irregular menstruation or pregnancy (implantation bleeding).
Most abnormal Pap tests are caused by HPV infections. Other types of infectionsuch as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells.
Clear and stretchy This is fertile mucous and means youre ovulating. Clear and watery This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercise. Yellow or green May indicate an infection, especially if its thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.
