Even when the two boards are of the same type, we oftentimes discover that the same stain does not produce the same results. The cells which form the pores of an oak board, for instance, vary in their natural color from red oak, which has a natural pinkish tint, to white oak, which is actually tan.
Different woods accept stain differently, to the point where getting close to the same color on different woods or even on different pieces of the same type of wood may require not only different techniques, but possibly different stains and processes as well.

Match the Stain A stain on woodwork in a home could have been re-stained many times over the years and has its own unique color. We suggest taking a piece of the existing woodwork to match at your favorite paint/stain store. Theyre going to get it pretty close. Youll use that as the base stain.
