RAW refers to any raw data file from a camera, but its not a standardized image format like JPEG and TIFF. Each camera manufacturer has its own unique RAW image format and theyre usually specific to each camera model.
How big is a RAW image? The size of a RAW file depends on the size of the sensor, and whether your camera is an MFT, APS-C, full-frame or medium format camera. Most RAW files are sized between 20 - 40 MB per file.
RAW files are docHubly bigger than JPEG (and any other) image file formats. Thats because they contain all the raw image information captured by your digital cameras sensors, completely uncompressed.
This is why different raw pictures taken on the same camera will most likely result in different file sizes. They are all pretty close in size, but theres definitely some variance, which is primarily due to compression of the raw sensor data as well as the metadata and embedded JPG preview image.
This often leads to confusion, with people mistakenly saying My jpgs are better than my raw files! This is to be expected though, because youve not post-processed your raw file yet the jpg only looks good because its been automatically tweaked in the camera, adding brightness, blacks, saturation, sharpening,
RAW image size depends upon the data that is being stored of every pixel. Generally, its varying from 2328 MB. There will be a change in the size depending upon the camera sensor resolution.
RAW images require a little more work to edit, and they take up more space. But as a result you get much more sensor data to work with, which results in more control over factors like dynamic range, colors, and noise. The result is a shockingly detailed, totally customizable, super-high-quality picture.
