Hundreds of MB is a normal size for Oracle Hyperion Financial Management databases. But the preferred way to determine the size of redo log files is to enable FASTSTARTMTTRTARGET, and run a typical database workload for a while. Then run the following query to obtain the optimal size of redo logs.
If checkpoints are not set to occur between log switches, make all groups the same size to guarantee that checkpoints occur at regular intervals. The minimum size permitted for a redo log file is 4 MB. See Also: Your operating systemspecific Oracle documentation.
Unlike the database block size, which can be between 2K and 32K, redo log files always default to a block size that is equal to the physical sector size of the disk. Historically, this has typically been 512 bytes (512B).
To enlarge the log file, use the MODIFY FILE clause of the ALTER DATABASE statement, specifying the SIZE and MAXSIZE syntax. For more information, see ALTER DATABASE (Transact-SQL) File and Filegroup options.
A good STARTING POINT for your log file is twice the size of the largest index in your database, or 25% of the database size. Whichever is larger. Why? If the largest object in your database is larger than 25% of your database, you are likely running some type of maintenance.
A: To check the archive log size in Oracle, you can use the following SQL statement: SELECT ROUND(SUM(BLOCKS * BLOCKSIZE) / 1024 / 1024) AS Archive Log Size (MB) FROM V$ARCHIVEDLOG; Q: What is the significance of checking the archive log size in Oracle?
First of all -- redo log files are NOT datafiles (hence, that command wont work) and second of all -- you cannot resize redo log files. You must drop each group and then recreate it. That is the only way.
Some tips: 1) You might want to examine the log files to see why the jump in size compared to previous weeks. 2) Use logrotate on a more frequent schedule to reduce individual log file size. 3) Log files should be moved off instances. Look into Stackdriver or similar products for log management.
