When we are outside on a sunny day, we can see how our shadows change throughout the day. The Suns position in the sky affects the length of the shadow. When the Sun is low on the horizon, the shadows are long. When the Sun is high in the sky, the shadows are much shorter.
Students began to realize that the changes in position of the earth as it rotated resulted in shadows changing positions. Most students were sharing similar observations. They noticed that their shadows would change as the Earth rotated.
By noon, in the middle of the day, the sun appears almost directly overhead. Your shadow is the shortest at this time of day. The same pattern happens in the afternoon. Your shadow gradually gets longer as it gets later in the afternoon and the sun appears lower in the sky.
Correct answer: The Earths rotation causes the shadows to change throughout the day. The rotation of the Earth also causes day and night. The Earths revolution causes slight changes in the length of these things because of its location in orbit.
As the Earth moves around the Sun, it changes from being tilted towards the Sun to being tilted away, and then back again. Shadows will be shorted when tilted towards the Sun and longer when tilted away.
Formation of Shadows It is only when light rays are obstructed we get the shadow of the object. The size of the shadow keeps on changing with the position of the sun. Shadows are always formed on the opposite side. Transparent objects cannot form a shadow.
As the Earth rotates on its axis, the sun appears to move across the sky, forming shadows that change its position throughout the day.
