The term sampling variability refers to the fact that the statistical information from a sample (called a statistic) will vary as the random sampling is repeated. Sampling variability will decrease as the sample size increases.
Determining the sample size begins with considering the population in a study. So, lets say I wanted to survey a population of 500, and I want to be 5% confident that I will get accurate results 95% of the time. I would need to survey 218 people.
Every sample is different as we are selecting only a few units from the entire population for the purpose of some study. So the statistics (mean, median, mode, s.d. etc) from one sample will differ from that of other sample.
As we have seen, each sample is likely to be different, so any statistic is likely to be vary from sample to sample. (The value of the population parameter does not change.) This variation in the possible values of the observed sampling statistic is called sampling variation.
The sample variance is a measure of dispersion of the observations around their sample mean. A squared deviation quantifies how far an observation is from the mean. The sample variance, being an average of the squared deviations, measures the average distance (or spread) from the mean.
The larger the between-sample variability, the more evidence you have of differences from one population to another. 2. The other source of variation is the fact that there is (usually) diversity within every sample. For example, you would not expect all of the numbers in sample 2 to be the same.
The minimum sample would be 100. This would give you a rough, but still useful, idea about their opinions. The maximum sample would be 600, which would give you a fairly accurate idea about their opinions.
Follow these steps to compute variance: Calculate the mean of the data. Find each data points difference from the mean value. Square each of these values. Add up all of the squared values. Divide this sum of squares by n 1 (for a sample) or N (for the population).
