You may have noticed that when you type a quote on your Mac, say in Pages or TextEdit or most other apps, youamp;#39;ll get a different character depending upon when it is you typed the quote. So, for instance, Iamp;#39;m going to hit the Shift and the key just to the left of the return key on the American keyboard that gives me a quote. But a curly quote in one direction and then at the end of this word Iamp;#39;m going to type it again and I get a different character. I get curly quotes in one direction and curly quotes in the other direction surrounding the quote. Now thereamp;#39;s no magic to how this happens. Itamp;#39;s not counting them like saying the first one is going to be in this direction and the second one in this direction and then third and fourth, fifth and sixth, etc. Itamp;#39;s just looking at the character before you typed the quote. So if itamp;#39;s a space itamp;#39;s going to get the idea that you want to start a quoted section here and if itamp;#39;s

Press Ctrl+H to open the Find And Replace window. Using Shift+2, type the quotation mark into both the Find What and Replace With boxes. Finally, click Replace All. You will see that this changes your curly quotes to straight quotes.
Select Proofing. Select AutoCorrect Options to open the AutoCorrect dialog box. Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab. In the Replace As You Type section, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box to turn smart quotes on or off.
In a Word document, select the quoted text, then click Layout on the ribbon. Set the left indent to 0.5cm, and click the Enter key. Use the arrows in the indent size box to increase or decrease the indentation. You will then see that the block quote has been created.

Mac Users. In Words Preferences, click AutoCorrect and then open the AutoFormat As You Type tab to find the straight/curly quotes option. If the checkbox is left blank, quotes will be straight. At the bottom of the middle set on the AutoFormat As You Type, look for the Straight quotes with smart quotes option.
To change these straight quotes to typeset appearance (i.e., smart quotes): From the Tools menu, select AutoCorrect. In the AutoCorrect window, click the AutoFormat As You Type tab. Make sure Straight quotation marks with smart quotation marks is selected, and then click OK.
Sometimes information is missing or inaccurate in a quote. Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent.
