The simplest way I think of direct vs inverse variation is this way: in an equation, ask yourself what would the other variable do if one variable went up or down. If the other variable goes in the same direction, then the two variables vary directly. If they go in opposite directions, they vary inversely.
For example, if y varies directly as x, and y = 6 when x = 2, the constant of variation is k = = 3. Thus, the equation describing this direct variation is y = 3x.
Solving a Direct Variation Problem Write the variation equation: y = kx or k = y/x. Substitute in for the given values and find the value of k. Rewrite the variation equation: y = kx with the known value of k. Substitute the remaining values and find the unknown.
There are many real-world scenarios where joint variation applies. For example, the area of a rectangular plot of land will vary jointly with its width and its length, and in physics, kinetic energy varies jointly with the square of the velocity of an object and the objects mass.
Direct Variation Formula: y = kx If x is not equal to zero then the value of the constant of proportionality can be given as k = y/x. Thus, the ratio of these two variables is always a constant number. Another way of expressing the direct variation equation is x = y / k.
Given a point (a,b), it is possible to solve a direct variation about this point. Firstly, find the constant of variation k which is k=a/b. Then, substitute this into the direct variation equation y=kx. Now that the equation is known, it is possible to find other points that satisfy the equation.

Okay. And the way we would do that is they give us information they say if he goes 80 miles in four hours okay.
The amount of money you earn is directly proportional to the number of hours you work. The weight of an object on the Moon varies directly with its weight on Earth. The volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature in Kelvin.
