The maximum capacity for a standard QR code (ing to Wikipedia) is 2,953 bytes or 23,624 bits. Each bit has two states, so the number of possible permutations is 2^23624 or about 3.4*10^7111.
Model 1 is the original QR Code. The largest version of this code is 14 (73 x 73 modules), which is capable of storing up to 1,167 numerals. Model 2 is an improvement on Model 1 with the largest version being 40 (177 x 177 modules), which is capable of storing up to 7,089 numerals.
Every QR Code Generator uses different algorithms and also different encodings (Numeric, Alphanumeric, Byte Mode, Kanji Mode, ECI Mode) when creating a QR Code. Therefore, it is possible that different looking QR Codes can have the same URL or text information encoded.
Micro QR codes are simpler than standard QR codes and can store less information. They can only encode a maximum of 35 characters (or 128 bits), compared to up to 3KB of data or over 7000 numeric characters for some standard QR codes.
The symbol versions of QR Code range from Version 1 to Version 40. Each version has a different module configuration or number of modules. (The module refers to the black and white dots that make up QR Code.)
Unlike single destination QR Codes where a print run of labels has just one common type, variable data QR code labels comprise of unique QR codes that direct people to individual destinations.
There are several alternatives to QR Codes, such as NFC, Data matrix, Snaptag, and RFID.
Amount of Data to be Encoded At present, there are 40 versions of QR codes (from Version 1 (21 21 modules) to Version 40 (177 177 modules)), with each version having a different module configuration for storing different amounts of data.
