It happens and for the most part, its totally OK. There are only a couple of exceptions, but as long as youre speaking with your healthcare provider, theres no need to reschedule your appointment if your time of the month overlaps.
Wondering if you can still come to your gynecology appointment when youre on your period? Most of the time, yes. If its for your annual exam, sometimes the Pap Smear Test can be inconclusive if youre bleeding heavily, but if its one of the lighter days of your period, you should be fine.
Some women may also get abnormal Pap smear results if theyre about to start or recently finished their period. This is due to the changes menstruation can cause in the cervix. If your results come back as abnormal, our providers will discuss additional testing to identify whats causing your abnormal results.
Its still possible to get your Pap smear done despite being on your period. However, there may be a risk of inaccurate results, especially if your flow is heavy during the day of your exam. As a rule of thumb, its best to call your OB-GYN if you have a Pap scheduled and have unexpectedly started your period.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Very rarely, prolonged or heavy bleeding may occur after a Pap smear. Heavy bleeding may sometimes happen because a persons monthly period coincides with the timing of the test. However, when a period is not the cause, heavy bleeding after a Pap smear could signal an infection or another health issue.
No, getting a Pap smear will not affect your period.
