Step One: Scroll through your document and determine where the page numbering changes. Most often, the two main sections are: Front Matter and Body. All page numbers should be the same font and size as your body text. Lower-case Roman numerals should be used for all preliminary pages, starting with ii on the page that appears after the title page. The title page is assumed to be the first page, but remains unnumbered.
To change the numbering format, go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers. Select the format you want, and then select OK. To change the numbering alignment, go to Header Footer Page Number Page Number.
The sixteenth edition of the Chicago Manual of Style calls for the beginning of the text to begin with the Arabic number 1, while the front matter that precedes it is to be numbered with lower-case Roman numerals.
To choose a format or to control the starting number, go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers. To change the numbering style, select a different style in Number format. To change the starting page number of the newly created section, select Start at, and then enter a number. Select OK.
