The Footnotes pane appears at the bottom of your document. You can edit the color or style of the separator by choosing options on the Home tab, or, to delete the separators, click Footnote Separator in the Footnotes list, and then select and delete the separator line.
Click or tap within your document content where you want to reference a footnote or endnote. On the References tab, select Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote. Note the newly created footnote, at the bottom of the current page or endnote, at the end of the document. Enter what you want in the footnote or endnote.
Footnotes should: Include the pages on which the cited information is found so that readers easily find the source. Match with a superscript number (example: 1) at the end of the sentence referencing the source. Begin with 1 and continue numerically throughout the paper. Do not start the order over on each page.
Change footnote numbering and layout Choose Type Document Footnote Options. In the Numbering And Formatting tab, select options that determine the numbering scheme and formatting appearance of the reference number and footnote text.
Add a footnote Click where you want to add a footnote. Click References Insert Footnote. Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds the footnote mark at the bottom of the page. Type the footnote text. Tip: To return to your place in your document, double-click the footnote mark.
Select the text you want to comment on, or click at the end of the text. On the Review tab, click New Comment. Type your comment. Word shows your comment in a balloon in the documents margin.
Try this: On the view tab, select Draft mode. At the bottom of the view is a footnote section. In the drop down over the footnotes, pick Footnote Separator. See if theres an extra tab or space before the line. If so, take it out. On the view tab, go back to Print Layout.
To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).
