With a theme and variation, the piece begins with a theme that is the main melody. That is followed by one or more variations of that melody. A variation is music that is similar to the theme but is also different enough that it does not repeat the melody exactly.
Theme and variation is a popular musical form in which a composer states a melody and then repeats it several times with changes to create more interest and variety. Some famous examples of this form are Charles Ives Variations on America and Mozarts Twelve Variations on Vous dirai-je, Maman K.
Motif comparison involves comparing a single column from each motif individually, and adding up the scores from all column comparisons. Since this causes the score to be highly dependent on motif length, the scores can instead be averaged using the arithmetic mean, geometric mean, median, or Fisher Z-transform.
A variation is music that is based on the original theme but is somehow different. A composer can vary the theme by changing the rhythm, changing the harmony, or by decorating the melody by adding additional notes.
Motifs can be modified slightly throughout a song. They may be altered by changing their rhythm, their melody, their order (played backwards for example) or a mix of all three. Motifs can be composed, like in an opera or a symphony, or they can be improvised.
16 ways to manipulate a motif Repetition - repeat exactly the same. Retrograde - perform it backwards. Inversion - perform it upside-down. Size - condense or expand. Tempo - fast, slow, stop. Rhythm - Vary the rhythm but not the tempo. Quality - vary the movement quality, eg.
Examples of Motifs in Music Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen: the first and second line of each verse follows the same melody (a melodic motif). Yesterday by The Beatles: every line in the verses ends with a similar melodythe notes are different, but the rhythm is the same as the first Yesterday (rhythmic motif).
You can do this by adding new notes, taking away pre-existing notes, switching up the rhythm, changing the harmonies, or whatever youd like to do. In this case, Im going to sequence the motif, which is a fancy way of saying Im going to move it up or down in pitch, and Im also going to switch up the last two notes.
