Developing a Motif in Music Start by establishing a key and a chord progression. Next, improvise a melody using the notes in your chosen key and play around with the number of notes, their intervals, order and rhythm. If possible, record a few variations before choosing your favorite combination.
Change the expression change from expressing calm to now express panic. Instrumentation same movement on a different body part. Repetition repeat parts or all. Fragmentation Change the order. Change the dynamics to all or part of it. Change levels - to all or part of it. Change Directions once or several times.
Symbolic Motifs: These motifs take the form of symbols that represent a larger idea or theme. Conceptual Motifs: These motifs are built around a particular concept or idea that recurs in the story. Structural Motifs: These motifs are repeated patterns or structures in the story.
While theyre usually thematic, motifs dont always signify a specific person, place, or idea like leitmotifs do. In that sense, all leitmotifs are motifs, but not all motifs are leitmotifs.
Composers develop motifs in a variety of ways, including: Repetition: motif repeated with no changes. Transposition: motif repeated at a higher or lower pitch. Inversion: motif repeated with reversed pitch direction, rhythm, or both. Augmentation: motif presented with longer note values.
The common motifs include the helix-turn-helix, the homeodomain, the leucine zipper, the helix-loop-helix, and zinc fingers of several types. The precise amino acid sequence that is folded into a motif determines the particular DNA sequence that is recognized.
Motifs are recurring concepts that are used to reinforce themes. They can be thought of as smaller aspects of a theme but are more specific. Themes are broad, overarching lessons that the author is trying to instill in the reader. Themes are broader than motifs.
You can do this by adding new notes, taking away pre-existing notes, switching up the rhythm, changing the harmonies, or whatever youd like to do. In this case, Im going to sequence the motif, which is a fancy way of saying Im going to move it up or down in pitch, and Im also going to switch up the last two notes.
