In the United States, most longitudinal markings are nominally 4 inches wide. The MUTCD defines the width of a normal pavement marking as 4 to 6 inches, and a wide pavement marking as at least twice the width of a normal marking (at least 8 inches).
White lane markings are the most common. Solid white lines define lanes of traffic going in the same direction, or they show you the location of the shoulder of the road. Broken or dotted white lines are used to show the center line between lanes. Yellow lines show you where traffic is going in different directions.
Remove existing pavement marking by water blasting, grinding, sandblasting, or other method approved by the Engineer. Do not use chemicals for the removal of thermoplastic traffic stripes and/or markings.
There are four different classifications of pavement marking materials including paints, thermoplastics, two-component resins, and preformed road markings commonly referred to as tapes. Each of these is composed of three primary components: binder, pigment, and glass beads.
Turning lanes, reversible lanes, HOV lanes, parking restrictions, yellow and white lines.
The road markings are classified as longitudinal markings, transverse markings, object markings, word messages, marking for parkings, marking at hazardous locations etc.
Many methods of pavement marking removal are available including grinding, various forms of blasting, burning, or chemical removal. Grinding is one of the most common, quickest, and cost-effective methods. The biggest disadvantage to grinding is scarring, affecting both the pavement texture and color.
