Congestive heart failure is a syndrome that can be caused by a variety of abnormalities, including pressure and volume overload, loss of muscle, primary muscle disease or excessive peripheral demands such as high output failure. The fluid buildup can cause shortness of breath and swelling of the legs and feet. Poor blood flow may cause the skin to appear blue or gray. Depending on your skin color, these color changes may be harder or easier to see. Some types of heart failure can lead to an enlarged heart.
In summary, typical findings of CHF on plain radiography include cardiomegaly; grade I, II, or III PVH; and increased central systemic venous volume, with enlargement of mediastinal veins (including the azygos vein) and pleural effusions.
