Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
The reasons for abnormal pap smears usually include human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, trichomoniasis and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), inflammation in the pelvic area, and vaginal infection.
Treatment Options After an Abnormal Pap Test This means you can watch and wait. Low-grade cervical changes are unlikely to become cervical cancer. If the changes are moderate- to high-grade, your doctor will evaluate more options. These changes create a higher risk of cervical cancer.
If your pap smear test comes back as abnormal, or positive, it means there is an unusual cell appearing in your cervix. This result does not mean you have cervical cancer. Most often, these test results are the sign there have been cell changes caused by HPV (human papillomavirus).
A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future.
The risk that atypical glandular cell (AGC) abnormalities reflect precancerous changes is as high as 35 percent, the risk of cervical cancer is as high as 1 percent, and the risk of endometrial (uterine) cancer is as high as 3 percent [2,4-6]. For most people with AGC, colposcopy is done as a next step.
An abnormal Pap smear doesnt necessarily mean you have cervical cancer. In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis.
Most times, the results of a pap smear return as normal; however, it is not uncommon for the results to come back as abnormal. The specialists in the lab will label abnormal cells ing to how different they are from normal cells.
