Patients in the end stages of heart failure want to know what to expect. The symptoms of end-stage congestive heart failure include dyspnea, chronic cough or wheezing, edema, nausea or lack of appetite, a high heart rate, and confusion or impaired thinking.
Congestive heart failure can be passed on from generation to generation. Several hereditary factors put people at higher risk if their family members have congestive heart failure, such as high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, and complications from diabetes.
Congestive heart failure (also called heart failure) is a serious condition in which the heart doesnt pump blood as efficiently as it should.
Heart failure is a life-limiting illness for many patients. Half of all HF patients die within four years of diagnosis, and more than 50 % of those with severe heart failure die within one year [10]. Especially in old age, the likelihood of heart failure as the cause of death increases.
In general, more than half of all people diagnosed with congestive heart failure will survive for 5 years. About 35% will survive for 10 years. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a chronic, progressive condition that affects the hearts ability to pump blood around the body.
Tiredness, weakness. Lack of appetite, nausea. Thinking difficulties, confusion, memory loss, feelings of disorientation. Increased heart rate, feeling like your heart is racing or throbbing.
However, life expectancy for a person with CHF has substantially improved over time. A persons age at diagnosis may impact prognosis. The authors report that the 5-year survival rate for people under 65 years of age was around 79%, while the rate was about 50% for those 75 and over.
Can 80- or 90-year-olds live with heart failure? They can, and they do. In fact, Ive helped heart failure patients as old as 103.
Signs of Worsening Heart Failure Shortness of breath. Feeling dizzy or lightheaded. Weight gain of three or more pounds in one day. Weight gain of five pounds in one week. Unusual swelling in the legs, feet, hands, or abdomen. A persistent cough or chest congestion (the cough may be dry or hacking)
A report averaging several smaller studies found that people under age 65 generally had a 5-year survival rate of 78.8 percent following CHF diagnosis. The same report found that people over age 75 had an average 5-year survival rate of 49.5 percent following diagnosis.
