Atypical glandular cells: When the glandular cells do not look normal, but they have concerning features that could be cancerous, the term used is atypical glandular cells (AGC). In this case, the patient should have more testing done. Adenocarcinoma: Cancers of the glandular cells are called adenocarcinomas.
Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Abnormal Pap test results: An abnormal test result may also be called a positive test result. Some of the cells of the cervix look different from the normal cells. An abnormal test result does not mean you have cancer. Your health care provider will recommend monitoring, more testing, or treatment.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
Try not to worry If youre referred for a colposcopy after an abnormal cervical screening test, you shouldnt assume you have cervical cancer. Less than 1 in 1,000 women referred for a colposcopy are found to have cervical cancer that requires immediate treatment.
Aside from HPV, other STDs, such as trichomoniasis or herpes, may also cause abnormal pap smears. Trichomoniasis often has several symptoms, such as vaginal itching, burning, discomfort while urinating, and vaginal discharge, so it is recommended to visit your gynecologist as soon as you notice these signs.
An abnormal Pap smear can be caused by cancerous cells. It can also be caused by other cervical and vaginal abnormalities, including dysplasia (precancerous cells) and inflammation. Inflammation may be caused by: yeast infections.
