Atypical cells can be found in various tissues and organs. Their presence can indicate potential precancerous changes, although not all atypical cells progress to cancer. Hyperplasia refers to tissue that grows thicker. Most of the time, this is a normal thing our bodies do.
Abnormal Pap test results: An abnormal test result may also be called a positive test result. Some of the cells of the cervix look different from the normal cells. An abnormal test result does not mean you have cancer. Your health care provider will recommend monitoring, more testing, or treatment.
It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection. It may also be a sign of inflammation, low hormone levels (in menopausal women), or a benign (not cancer) growth, such as a cyst or polyp.
Atypical cells mean that the cells are not entirely normal. Normal cells go through quite a few changes before they become cancerous. The cells may not necessarily become cancer cells. The cells might not change further. Or they may die off or go back to normal.
An ASCUS PAP smear is almost never a sign of cancer. It is usually a result of mild infection or inflammation of the cervix. The chance of the ASCUS PAP smear leading to a pre-cancerous condition of the cervix is dependant on the HPV status.
On occasion you may see a report from a Pap test or tissue biopsy stating atypical cells present. This might cause you to worry that this means cancer, but atypical cells arent necessarily cancerous. Many factors can make normal cells appear atypical, including inflammation and infection.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
In most cases, the presence of abnormal squamous cells does not indicate the presence of cervical cancer. However, abnormal Pap results should always be discussed with a medical professional so that an individualized action plan can be created.
