The Confederate assembly in Montgomery, Alabama adopted the first national flag of the Confederate States of America in March of 1861. This flag was raised over the Capital in Montgomery, Alabama on March 4, 1861.

As the slow process of reconciliation took place in post-Civil War Maryland, a new symbol emerged. A flag incorporating alternating quadrants of the Calvert and Crossland colors began appearing at public events.
The Maryland flag has a Confederate symbol in it. However, it originally was part of the symbol of the founding family of Maryland. Only later was it co-opted by Confederate soldiers, ing to a vexillologist. Its barely remembered that way today.
