NB-IoT can be deployed on both 2G (GSM) and 4G (LTE) networks, while LTE-M is solely for 4G. However, LTE-M is already compatible with the existing LTE network, while NB-IoT uses DSSS modulation, which requires specific hardware. Both are planned to be available on 5G.
NB-IoT focuses specifically on indoor coverage, low cost, long battery life, and high connection density. NB-IoT uses a subset of the LTE standard, but limits the bandwidth to a single narrow-band of 200kHz. It uses OFDM modulation for downlink communication and SC-FDMA for uplink communications.
Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) is a type of Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) radio technology that connects devices to the Internet of Things (IoT). Things that could never be connected before are now part of an LTE-based network with excellent coverage, running on a licensed spectrum.
Is NB-IoT 5G? NB-IoT and LTE-M were initially developed for the 4G LTE standard. However, 3GPP, the standards group responsible for 5G as well as the NB-IoT and LTE-M standards, has made NB-IoT and LTE-M part of the 5G standard.
LTE-M fills the gaps where NB-IoT is no longer sufficient. For example, LTE-M has a higher data rate of up to 1 Mbit/s and can thus transmit a large amount of data in less time than NB-IoT. In addition, LTE-M masters the seamless radio cell change, the so-called handover.
NarrowBand-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a standards-based low power wide area (LPWA) technology developed to enable a wide range of new IoT devices and services. NB-IoT docHubly improves the power consumption of user devices, system capacity and spectrum efficiency, especially in deep coverage.
LTE-cat1 remains useful for devices that need higher bandwidth, while cellular LTE-catM or NB-IoT provide a simpler, less expensive, and more efficient way to support the small, battery-powered devices, such as sensors that transmit readings and asset tags that report location, that have become so present in the IoT.
LTE Cat M1 uses 1.4 MHz bandwidth in contrast to narrowband competitor NB-IoT using 200 kHz. Likewise, LTE Cat M1 offers a 1Mbps data rate compared to 250 kbps. However, a higher data rate is not a vital need for LPWAN technologies.
