Why does EGT decrease after leaning beyond peak EGT?

This is known as stoichiometric mixture. Leaning the mixture further past this perfect fuel:air ratio results in too little fuel entering the cylinder for the volume of air. This results in weaker combustion (due to the fuel shortage) and the EGT starts to come down.

What affects EGT?

EGT is affected by mixture. Peak EGT occurs at approximately the stoichiometric (chemically correct) mixture of 14.7 pounds of air for each pound of fuel, at which there is exactly the right amount of oxygen to oxidize all the hydrocarbon chains in the fuel.

Are all EGT sensors the same?

There are two types of exhaust gas temperature sensors; one with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) sensing element, and the other a negative temperature coefficient (NTC), the only difference being how they measure the temperature.

Why does the EGT increase when you lean the mixture?

As the mixture is leaned from the full rich position, the EGT increases (as shown) as the amount of excess fuel is decreased. The less excess fuel, the greater the EGT. While excess fuel is present, the EGT increases with mixture leaning until no excess fuel exists.

How high is too high for EGT?

At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety. What happens when your EGT gets too high? Nothing good! Certain parts of your engine can fail due to the excessive heat produced.

Why does a lean mixture burn hotter?

Leaner fuel-air mixtures have slower combustion rates. Slower combustion times translate to less energy converted into mechanical work and more converted into heat (which is then absorbed by engine).

What happens when EGT gets too hot?

Excessive EGT can also erode or crack the turbine housing. In extreme cases, high EGT can drive the turbocharger into an overspeed condition that exceeds the designed operating speed due to the additional heat energy. When this happens, either the turbine wheel or the compressor wheel may burst.

How does timing affect EGT?

Exhaust gas temperatures, are a byproduct of the combustion effect. Of course ignition timing, plays a big role, in what we see when monitoring EGT temperatures. As we know, advancing the timing, typically results in lower egts, and retarding the timing, typically increases it.

What does leaning the mixture do?

Leaning the mixture mixes less fuel with the air in order to keep the air/fuel ratio at a constant 14.7:1 ratio. Even with a leaned mixture, as the air becomes less dense, less power is produced because less air and fuel enters the engine.

How do you lean a mixture to peak EGT?

When you decide to start leaning the engine, pull the mixture back slowly. As the EGT temperature climbs, it will eventually slow down. Finally, the temperature will peak (docHub the hottest temperature) and start dropping again. Watch for the temperature to start dropping.
