For accurate engine calculations, it is essential to maintain accurate cylinder temperature readings. If the CHT sensor fails, it could lead to fuel inefficiency, engine overheating, stalling, and, in extreme cases, complete failure.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
During normal driving, on a level road, EGTs should be in the 600 to 800-degree range. A lower cruising EGT can be a great indicator of getting good fuel economy. Even during normal driving, exhaust gas temperature is a value that can tell you how efficiently your engine is working at a given moment, gear, and speed.
CHT measures heat energy wasted during the power stroke, when the cylinder is under maximum stress from high internal pressures and temperatures. EGT measures heat energy wasted during the exhaust stroke, when the cylinder is under relatively low stress.
It is best to place the probe where the exhaust headers meet. With multi-carb engines, it is best to mount one probe for each cylinder.
When dealing with a diesel vehicle, your EGT is a critical factor in its performance. Generally speaking, the lower your EGT, the better. At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety.
While CHT mainly shows whats going on in the cylinder during the power stroke before the exhaust valve opens, EGT mainly shows whats going on during the exhaust stroke after the exhaust valve opens.
High EGTs do not represent a threat to engine life. When adjusting power settings and mixture, it is important to pay close attention to CHT because it is the best representation of stress on the engine.
