Weamp;#39;re going to start with the absolute basics of how you even just get a page number onto every single page in Word. Then weamp;#39;ll look at some more advanced topics like how you start your page numbers from a specific page. To follow along, Iamp;#39;ve included a sample document down below in the description. Letamp;#39;s check this out. Here I am in Microsoft Word, and I want to add page numbers to this document. To insert page numbers, up on the top tabs, letamp;#39;s click on the insert option. Over on the right-hand side, letamp;#39;s click on page number and here we see several different options. We can insert a page number at the top of the page and here we can left align it, center align it, or right align it, and if I scroll down, we see a number of different options. Under the [Home] tab in the Paragraph section, click the [Numbering] drop-down menu. Choose a numbering style or select Bullets and Numbering to create a customized numbering style. To change the alignment of the numbered list, from the Paragraph section, click the [Align Text] drop-down menu.
Define a new list style Select the text or numbered list you want to change. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Multilevel List. Specify a name for your new list style. Choose the number to start the list at. Choose a level in the list to apply your formatting.
Start page numbering later in your document Go to Insert Header or Footer Edit Header or Edit Footer. Select Different First Page. In the header or footer area, you should see a label on the first page that says First Page Header. Select Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.
Go to File Options Proofing. Select AutoCorrect Options, and then select the AutoFormat As You Type tab. Select or clear Automatic bulleted lists or Automatic numbered lists.
Change the numbering in a numbered list Double-click the numbers in the list. The text wont appear selected. Right-click the number you want to change. Click Set Numbering Value. In the Set value to: box, use the arrows to change the value to the number you want.
To choose a format or to control the starting number, go to Header Footer Page Number Format Page Numbers. To change the numbering style, select a different style in Number format. To change the starting page number of the newly created section, select Start at, and then enter a number. Select OK.
Define a new number format Select the text or numbered list you want to change. , and then click Define New Number Format. To change the style, click the down arrow next to Number style and choose numbers, letters, or another chronological format.
Multilevel Under Click level to modify, choose the level you would like to define. Under the Number style for this level drop-down menu, choose a new number style. To format the number style, click [Font]. To define additional levels, choose another level to modify. When finished, click [OK].
