Many web servers add Vary HTTP headers to content by default. This header lets applications alter content based on the browser in use or other client properties. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to cache content for quicker delivery.
What is the function of HTTP Vary Header? HTTP Vary header is the primary mechanism for returning an HTTP response of the server to notify intermediate caches (like proxy servers) that the website content varies depending on the specifications of the requesting web client.
This is because the browser checks the Vary header before caching a response to ensure that the cached response only applies to the same request headers. If Vary: Origin is not set, the browser may incorrectly apply the cached response to different Origin request headers, leading to CORS errors.
The Vary HTTP response header tells user agents (clients) that the servers response can vary if the client changes any of the mentioned request headers. Vary: Accept-Encoding. This means that if the browser sends a different value in the Accept-Encoding request header, the server might send a different response.
The Access-Control-Allow-Origin response header indicates whether the response can be shared with requesting code from the given origin.
The Vary: Origin header When a browser makes a CORS request, it automatically adds an Origin header to indicate the source of the request. The server must check this header and add an Access-Control-Allow-Origin header to indicate which sources can access the requested resource.
