Adds the specified request headers to the cache key for the resource. Fastly reads this header from responses. It is defined by an external standard. A Vary response header tells caches that a particular header (or headers) from the request should be used to make the cache key for the object more specific.
The Vary HTTP response header describes the parts of the request message aside from the method and URL that influenced the content of the response it occurs in. Most often, this is used to create a cache key when content negotiation is in use.
It works by sending the username and password of the requester in plain text, encoded with base64, to the server. The server then decodes the credentials and checks if they match the ones stored in its database. If they do, the server grants access to the requested resource.
This is because the browser checks the Vary header before caching a response to ensure that the cached response only applies to the same request headers. If Vary: Origin is not set, the browser may incorrectly apply the cached response to different Origin request headers, leading to CORS errors.
Many web servers add Vary HTTP headers to content by default. This header lets applications alter content based on the browser in use or other client properties. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to cache content for quicker delivery.
The HTTP -Authenticate response header defines the HTTP authentication methods (challenges) that might be used to gain access to a specific resource. Note: This header is part of the General HTTP authentication framework, which can be used with a number of authentication schemes.
Edit -- to more precisely answer your question: the HTTP request header Accept defines the Content-Types a client can process. If you have two copies of the same content at the same URL, differing only in Content-Type, then using Vary: Accept could be appropriate.
Basic Authentication is a method for an HTTP user agent (e.g., a web browser) to provide a username and password when making a request. When employing Basic Authentication, users include an encoded string in the Authorization header of each request they make.
