AR and VR are increasingly being used in sensitive contexts like business and healthcare, meaning authentication on these devices is critical. Our work looks at the budding area of AR/VR authentication and identifies promising directions. First, we consider user and developer perspectives. We surveyed over 100 users and developers and identified common concerns. From this data, we distilled a list of desired properties for any AR and VR authentication method. Using these properties, we evaluated the state of AR and VR authentication today. We found, for example, that passwords are the most frequently-used authentication mechanism in current apps, while more usable options like federated login are underutilized. On the other hand, prior work presents varied and usable mechanisms that are also hard to deploy. Our work culminated in the massive table on the right.
