Even if you had a secure attachment in childhood, betrayal and other difficult experiences can cause you to develop an insecure attachment later in life. You can also have different attachment styles with different people. Because of your past experiences, there may be certain people with whom you feel more secure.
Researchers found that most infants across cultures were securely attached (70%). China and Great Britain showed the lowest percentage of secure attachments. Also, Western countries that value independence, such as the US and European countries, had high levels of insecure-avoidant infants.
Cultural variations in attachment are the differences in attachment patterns that exist between infants and their caregivers in different cultures.
The four types of attachment explored in Ainsworths Strange Situation experiment are secure attachment, insecure-avoidant attachment, insecure-resistant attachment, and disorganized attachment.
Bowlby identified four types of attachment styles: secure, anxious-ambivalent, disorganised and avoidant.
Schaffer and Emerson theorised that there are four stages of attachment development: asocial stage (0-6 weeks), Indiscriminate attachment stage (6 weeks to 6 months), specific attachment stage (7-9 months) and multiple attachment stage (10+months).
Beyond categorizing attachment as secure or insecure, there are three subsets of insecure attachment which give us the four main attachment styles: Secure attachment style. Anxious (or ambivalent) attachment style. Avoidant-dismissive attachment style. Disorganized attachment style.
In recent decades, research into attachment theory has found that a child can develop a different attachment style with each parent: they may have, for example, a secure attachment with one and an anxious attachment with the other.
